According to one study, 3.4 billion phishing emails are sent out each day across the world. Gmail Protection Service blocks more than 100 million phishing emails a day. Considering this volume of attempts to defraud people and our busy lives online, the likelihood that at least one email will trick us into clicking on it is quite strong.

Henry has been in meetings all morning and he has 45 minutes until his next one. Henry checks his email and comes across an offer for free chips and a drink if he orders delivery from his favorite deli. Perfect! He clicks on the link, orders his sandwich, puts in his credit card, and waits for his lunch. After 30 minutes of waiting, Henry starts to get irritated. The ad promised “spooky speedy” delivery and he is running out of time. He calls the local deli franchise to check on his order, and they tell him that they didn't receive it. He yells at them that he placed it online and now he won’t get to eat until late afternoon. He hangs up swearing to never eat there again.

Henry has just been an unwitting victim of phishing. The ad looked real. The website where he ordered his food looked real. Nothing alerted him that something was not right. Only when he gets the alert from his credit card company an hour later informing him that someone bought $10,000 worth of computer equipment, does he put the pieces together and go back to his email to check the sender’s email address. He is very upset with himself! “All I wanted was a sandwich!”

Consequences for organizations whose users fall for phishing scams are much greater than a credit card fraud claim and a missing sandwich. Data breaches can cost you millions of dollars, ruin your reputation and even cause bankruptcy. Investing less than the price of a cup of coffee per user per month creates a strong barrier for the enormous wave of cybercrimes being delivered to inboxes every day of the year!
