In March, we reported that communications titan Plantronics would be acquiring conferencing and collaboration company Polycom for $2 billion. The proposed deal made a great deal of sense to industry observers, as Polycom’s much-respected collaboration solutions dovetailed nicely with Plantronics’ various audio innovations.

On July 2, Plantronics announced the completion of their Polycom acquisition, which is expected to enable the the company to deliver the broadest portfolio of endpoints in the Unified Communications and Collaboration market.

“Plantronics now offers an unparalleled portfolio of integrated, intelligent solutions that spans headsets, software, desk phones, audio and video conferencing, and cloud services,” said Joe Burton, Plantronics’ President and Chief Executive Officer. “This combined offering empowers people with the tools and flexibility they need to create the best experience when connecting to what is most important to them.”

When they announced their acquisition plans in March, Plantronics offered four main reasons for pursuing Polycom. First, Polycom’s vaunted place in the voice and video collaboration markets will help Plantronics realize their goal of delivering new collaboration and communication experiences. Second, as previously mentioned, Plantronics will now have an exceedingly broad portfolio of complementary services and products across the communications and collaboration ecosystem. Third, Plantronics will now be able to pursue opportunities in the Unified Communications market.  And finally, Polycom’s many innovative solutions will considerably expand the services Plantronics already offers.

According to Recon Research’s Ira M. Weinstein, Plantronics is now perfectly positioned to cater to an ever-growing client base that demands flexible solutions.

“The company’s offerings work with on-premises, cloud and hybrid platforms, giving customers the flexibility to choose their deployment method and cloud migration timing,” Weinstein said. “In addition, its global channel and technology partner ecosystem fosters both innovation and global reach. We’re expecting great things in the future from the new and expanded Plantronics.”

Among the many Polycom products that will now fall under the Plantronics umbrella is the recently updated Polycom RealPresence Trio, an ostensible audio conferencing solution that is in fact an all-in-one collaboration powerhouse. The new iteration of RealPresence Trio now includes high-end video capabilities like facial tracking and dual monitor support, along with superior audio coverage and streamlined content sharing--all of it managed with the Trio touch screen.
