With the rise of cloud-based conferencing and collaboration solutions like Prime Call Cloud UC, offering telecommuting options to your employees is easier than ever. With nothing more than a computer and a camera, your employees can connect to their colleagues and clients anytime, from anywhere. No longer constrained by the cost of hardware investments and IT maintenance, you really have nothing standing between you and an expanded remote workforce.

And evidence suggests you should really be doing more to court, hire and retain remote and flex employees. In a recent survey of 7,300 employees conducted by job-search website FlexJobs, 30% of respondents reported leaving a job because it did not offer flexible work options, while 16% are currently looking for new work due to flexibility issues. An overwhelming majority (82%) of respondents said they would be more loyal to their employer if they had flexible work options, while more than half (52%) said they have tried to negotiate flex work arrangements with their employer.

The FlexJobs survey also found that job-seeking people rank “flexible work options” high above perks and benefits like vacation time, health insurance, retirement plans and paternity/maternity leave.

According to a special analysis of the American Community Survey (ACS) by Global Workplace Analytics, the remote and flexible work consulting firm, and FlexJobs, many companies are stepping up and offering telecommuting options to recruit and retain their employees. The number of people telecommuting in the United States increased 159% between 2005 and 2017, with 4.7 million people in the U.S. currently telecommuting.

"With improvements to technology, and increasing demands from employees in a tight labor market, we fully expect to see the momentum around this important workplace trend continue to grow," said Sara Sutton, CEO of FlexJobs.

Global Workplace Analytics president Kate Lister, in a press release accompanying the results of the analysis, described the rise of telecommuting as a boon for both employees and employers.

"Talent shortages are fueling the growth of workplace flexibility right now because not only is it one of the most sought-after benefits among job seekers today, it also expands the talent pool by allowing employers to hire the best and the brightest from around the world,” she said.
